Information about List Of Merritt Island Launch Sites
Merritt Island's two spaceports are shown on this map.
John F. Kennedy Space Center
John F. Kennedy Space Center has one launch site with two pads. This was the site of the Saturn V launches, all manned Skylab flights, the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, as well as those of the Space Shuttle. Current plans will see the two launch pads being converted for future Project Constellation use after the Shuttle is retired in 2010.- Launch Complex 39A, active, Saturn V (primary facility), Space Shuttle--future planned Ares V (CaLV) primary facility and Ares I (CLV) backup facility
- Launch Complex 39B, active, Saturn V (backup facility), Saturn IB (Skylab and Apollo-Soyuz), Space Shuttle--future planned Ares I primary facility and Ares V backup facility
- Launch Complex 39C, unbuilt, Saturn V-- possible future Ares I and Ares V back-up/manned Mars mission support facility
- Launch Complex 39D, planned, Advanced Saturn V
- Launch Complex 39E, planned, Advanced Saturn V
Cape Canaveral Air Force Station
Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) was the site of all pre-Apollo manned launches, as well as many other important early Department of Defense (DoD) and NASA launches. For the DoD, it plays a secondary role to Vandenberg AFB in California, but is still the launch site for many NASA unmanned space probes, as those spacecraft are typically launched on Air Force launchers. Active launch vehicles are in bold.Much of the support activity for CCAFS occurs at nearby Patrick Air Force Base.
