Information about List Of Merritt Island Launch Sites

Merritt Island's two spaceports are shown on this map.
Merritt Island, off of the eastern coast of Florida, is home to two spaceports, servicing several launch sites for rockets.

John F. Kennedy Space Center

John F. Kennedy Space Center has one launch site with two pads. This was the site of the Saturn V launches, all manned Skylab flights, the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, as well as those of the Space Shuttle. Current plans will see the two launch pads being converted for future Project Constellation use after the Shuttle is retired in 2010.

Cape Canaveral Air Force Station

Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) was the site of all pre-Apollo manned launches, as well as many other important early Department of Defense (DoD) and NASA launches. For the DoD, it plays a secondary role to Vandenberg AFB in California, but is still the launch site for many NASA unmanned space probes, as those spacecraft are typically launched on Air Force launchers. Active launch vehicles are in bold.

Much of the support activity for CCAFS occurs at nearby Patrick Air Force Base.
