Khrabrovo Airport (Russian Аэропорт Храброво, German Powunden) (IATA: KGDICAO: UMKK) is located 24 km north of Kaliningrad, east off the Zelenogradsk highway. The airport, part of which is still military, has a brand new passenger terminal, which partly is still under construction. Espexially the baggage claim area is still outside on the right side. Service is prompt and couteous, in comparison to other russian airports. In 2005 the airport had 311,000 passengers.

The airport is the main hub for the airline KD Avia, which serves some western european cities as well. This airline is planning to evolve the airport into a hub between Russia and Western Europe. In addition there are some other airlines offering services to domestic destinations and to Northern and Eastern Europe.

History

  • 1922 - Joint Russian-German joint venture Deruluft starts flights on first scheduled international route Koenigsberg (Devau airport) - Moscow
  • 1945 - Airport is transferred to Civil Air Fleet of USSR
  • 1961 - Joint Air Squadron formed at the basis of airport and airline
  • 1977 - Operations of Tupolev-134 begin
  • 1979 - Passenger terminal is built in Khrabrovo
  • 1988 - Tupolev-154s begin operations to Kaliningrad
  • 1992 - Enterprise separates from Vnukovo Production association and becomes independent entity
  • 1993 - First scheduled international flights begin. Two Tupolev-154s are purchased
  • 1997 - Air enterprise is renamed “Kaliningrad Avia?
  • 2001 - Air enterprise is in receivership
  • 2002 - Change of ownership structure. Transformation into Joint Stock Company
  • 2004 – Beginning of reconstruction of runway, apron, navigation equipment
  • 2005 – Air enterprise renamed “KD Avia?
  • 2007 - opening of the new terminal
