A national university is a university created or run by a national government and might or might not be autonomous from government interference. Some national universities are closely associated with national cultural or political aspirations. For instance the National University of Ireland in the early days of Irish independence collected a large amount of information on the Irish language and Irish culture.

National University (NU) is an accredited, private, non-profit institution of higher learning based in San Diego, California. NU is the second largest private institution in California. NU's primary students are adults with an average age of 36. Roughly 22,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students are currently enrolled.

Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), NU has 28 regional campuses in California and in Henderson, Nevada. Ten NU Learning Centers are located on military bases throughout Southern California.

NU has five schools; Business and Management; Education; Engineering and Technology; Health and Human Services; and Media and Communication; and the College of Letters and Sciences.

NU offers 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as 16 teacher credential and certificate programs. National offers more than 40 graduate and undergraduate degree programs and over 300 courses online.

NU has 13 locations in San Diego County. Campuses are also located in Camarillo, Costa Mesa, Sacramento, Redding, San Jose, Stockton, Fresno, Bakersfield, Ontario, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Sherman Oaks, Orange and Twentynine Palms, and Henderson.

NU is part of the National University System, which also includes the National Polytechnic College of Engineering and Oceaneering; Spectrum Pacific Learning Company LLC; National University Virtual High School; WestMed College; and National University International.

NU's headquarters are in La Jolla, California.

University Recognition

In 2006, NU earned an Emmy award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Pacific Southwest Chapter, for its "One University" commercial.

In 2002, NU was the first university since 1996 to be recognized with a Eureka ("Baby Baldrige") Award by the California Council for Excellence.

In 2003, NU received its second Eureka Award - the only institution of higher education to be recognized.

The Commission on Teaching Credentialing has identified that NU has for the past six years prepared more credentialed teachers than any single institution of higher education in California. Diverse Issues in Higher Education annually ranks NU among the top ten institutions in the nation in granting master's degrees in education to minority students.

Though not ranked, National University was listed, along with enrollment, student retention, and graduation statistics, in the annual ranking issue of U. S. colleges and universities published by U.S. News and World Report.
