It’s the Holy Grail of every website owner often lamented with the cry, How do I get more traffic to my website? More often than not, you’ll find the word free thrown in there somewhere.

What the questioners should be asking is: How can I get more TARGETED traffic to my website? After all, 10 interested viewers beats 100 lookers every time. Especially if you can turn at least one of those 10 people into buyers. Here are five of the methods that I use to accomplish this.

Traffic Exchanges. I don’t use the traffic exchanges most folks think of. The only one I use that really counts is a program called InstantBuzz.com (http://tinyurl.com/2q7ay2) InstantBuzz doesn’t require that I surf other sites for 10, 20 or 30 seconds. It’s a tool bar that sits at the top of my browser minding it’s own business. Every time I surf the net, I get my site link displayed one someone else's toolbar. I can constantly check the effectiveness of my headline to see how many clicks it is getting.

Free ebooks and/or free reports. These books/reports should provide enough general information about your product/site to entice the reader to follow through by clicking on your site link. This is a tough road to follow, because you don’t want to give away all your secrets. But, you do want to provide enough information to encourage your reader to visit your site.

Forums. Probably one of the easiest ways to get free, targeted traffic to your site is from forums. But, you want to do this in a very responsible manner. Find some forums that fit in with your specific areas of interest. Spend some time getting to know the folks. Ask/answer questions you can.. DO NOT mention your site any place but in your sig file.

Blogs. This can help in a couple of ways. First you build a blog that compliments your website. Post to it several times a week and provide general information that is used to draw your readers to your website for further examination of your product. Be sure you’ve got a link on your blog to your website. It wouldn’t hurt to even post your site link at the bottom of each post.

Articles. Nothing beats a good article. Let’s say you’re selling Widgets on your site. You could write a number of articles on Widgets and post them on various article directory sites for others to use. Maybe a series on the Origin of the Widget, Why Red Widgets Outsell Green Widgets, etc. Of course in your author’s bio you would include a link to your website.

Not only will the above ideas help you draw targeted traffic to your website, over time it also will help boost your website PR with Google. So, in the long run you get kind of a two-for-one benefit from using the above methods.

To find even more ways to get targeted traffic to your sites, try doing a search. By putting your search in quotations, you will get a more exact response. For example, Free Traffic in quotes will get you tons of responses from a Google search. Any time you want a more refined answer to your searches, remember to use the quotes.
